Empty school buses as a representation of student lives lost

The NRA Children’s Museum from Change the Ref is a mile-long convoy of empty school buses in memory of lives lost to guns:

Since 2020, firearms have overtaken car accidents to become the leading cause of death in children, taking over 4368 lives.

With the advent of this horrific moment, we’ve built a mobile museum made of 52 empty school buses representing 4368 victims. Some of the buses feature an exhibit of artifacts, photos, videos, audio recordings, and personal memories of these children who have lost their lives to guns.

Stacked bus routes on a map

Speaking of 3-D usage on maps, here’s a map of bus routes in Singapore stacked one on top of the other. I’m not sure it’s especially useful to find individual routes as intended, but the overall distribution of routes seems like it might be interesting to someone familiar with the area. Or, maybe it’s world’s greatest roller coaster.

Aggregate the Los Angeles realtime bus feed

LA Bus

There is a realtime feed for the location of Los Angeles buses. It's a bit messy. Morgan Herlocker made it straightforward to aggregate. Have at it. [Thanks, @augustjoki]

Why buses bunch at single stops

Bus bunching

Maybe you've waited at a bus stop for longer than usual, and your bus finally shows up. And then, immediately after, a second bus on the same route pulls up right behind. What gives? Why can't they stay evenly spaced to improve everyone's waiting time? Lewis Lehe provides an explanation in a small interactive game.

Two buses travel along the same route, starting off in opposite positions. They make stops and pick up passengers right on schedule. But then add in your own small delays, and you see bunching relatively quickly. It really doesn't take much to throw off the equal spacing.

So the next time you find yourself in a bunching situation. Don't hate the driver. Hate the system.

See also Lehe's other interactive explainers on traffic gridlock and congestion. Lehe, by the way, is a PhD candidate in transportation engineering.
