Long-exposure bird flights

Bird flight

Using a long-exposure photography technique, Xavi Bou captured bird flight patterns in his series Ornitographies.

Unlike other motion analysis which preceded it, Ornitographies moves away from the scientific approach of chronophotography used by photographers like Eadweard Muybridge and Etienne-Jules Marey.

The approach used by Xavi Bou to portray the scene is not invasive; moreover, it rejects the distant study, resulting in organic form images that stimulate the imagination.

Rapper travels and a robot arm

Kanye West

Maximum Distance. Minimum Displacement. by Tahir Hemphill explores rappers' geographic mentions in their lyrics.

Geographic mentions from the complete bodies of work of 12 rappers were extracted using the language analysis database invented by Hemphill — the Rap Almanac. These locations were translated into geographic coordinates, which were then made into points used to plot the movements of an industrial robot arm.

For several minutes at a time, the robot arm drew the paths while holding a light pen producing sculptural forms made with light. Each unique shape represents the global distance travelled by the lyrics in each artist's career.

The above is the result for Kanye West.

Motion Exposure

Kayak

Motion Exposure, a photography project by Stephen Orlando, captures movement patterns with light.

I'm fascinated with capturing motion through time and space into a single photograph. Using LED lights with custom color patterns and long exposure photography, I'm able to tell the story of movement. This technique reveals beautiful light trails created by paths of familiar objects. These light trails have not been artificially created with Photoshop and represent the actual paths of the objects.

The above shows kayaking movements, which is just one of many activities including canoeing, soccer, karate, and bike polo. See it all in the Orlando's galleries. [via Colossal]
