A lot of galaxies

NASA released an image from the Webb First Deep Field telescope, which shows a whole lot of galaxies:

Thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared – have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time. This slice of the vast universe covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground.

We are tiny specks.

Interconnectedness of the galaxies

Cosmic web

A group of researchers are studying how all the galaxies in the universe are connected, network-style.

The concept of the cosmic web—viewing the universe as a set of discrete galaxies held together by gravity—is deeply ingrained in cosmology. Yet, little is known about architecture of this network or its characteristics. Our research used data from 24,000 galaxies to construct multiple models of the cosmic web, offering complex blueprints for how galaxies fit together.

Of particular interest, a set of three interactive visualizations by Kim Albrecht let you poke around at the networks derived from these models. Pretty awesome and yet another reminder of how little I know about everything.
